I think we should pick a city location were things are little bit on the quiet. I think NY is too expensive (hotel, car rental, entertainment, food etc, etc). too crowded, difficult to move around for first-time visitors, and security-wise very risky. I know people will love to use the opportunity to see NY,but let us not forget other difficulties we might encounter there as a big city. I think the organizers should reseach a little into other cities and see how affordable and convenient it will be for us. They should try and get contact (Opassian) person in some, if not all, of the major cities for them to do research into cost of hosting the meeting or conference there.
Yaw, you are right NY is expensive. We were thinking of a more central (easy to get to) location. I think your suggestion about researching into other cities is good.
